love, death, creation (2022)

This new show by Kemal Payza explores the philosophical themes of Love, Death and Creation, in 14 vignettes created for 6 dancers by 4 international choreographers. The dance is accompanied by a soundtrack featuring unusual musical selections played on instruments that are rarely heard in contemporary dance.

The inspiration for the show developed from a reflection on the transient nature of existence. We leave our offspring, our works of art and our legacy to continue after our death, but will they last forever? To what extent is our appreciation of art, music and dance magnified by contemplating the ephemeral nature of these works?

The six dancers will present a series of solos, duets and group performances. One of the main parts will feature all the dancers in a piece called « Art versus Mortality », featuring J.S. Bach’s famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, performed by harpist Amy Turk. For this nine-minute work, choreographers Leyva and Hong have combined their inspiration on the ephemeral nature of existence and the transient nature of beauty and our own mortality, and therefore on the importance of savoring our relationships, and art and music as intensely and as long as we can.
